The Sentry®Safe brand of security products are manufactured by Sentry Group, a family-owned safe manufacturing company that have been producing safes and security storage containers for over 75 years. Sentry Group today produce more fire-resistant chests, file cabinets, safes, security storage containers, and gun safes than any other company in the world.
The SentrySafe range of Fire-Safe® products for the home include:
Data & Document Security Products – Chests, file cabinets and storage containers to protect your important paper documents and electronic media (CDs, DVDs, USB Drives, Hard Drives) from fire, water and other disaster scenarios.
Home Safes – Safes to protect your important paper documents and electronic media from theft. These safes may also provide protection from fire and water disaster scenarios.
Fire Protection
The Underwriters Laboratory (UL) is and independent organization responsible for testing different makes and models of safes to see exactly how fireproof these safes actually are. SentrySafe Fire-Safe® products are subjected to fire for 1/2, 1 or 2 hours, and for a product to earn a UL classification, the documents and electronic media stored inside must remain completely undamaged.
SentrySafe Fire-Safe® products are tested by the Underwriters Laboratory, and are given the following UL ratings:
1/2-Hour Fire Endurance – Subjected to temperatures of 1550°F for 1/2 hour. The interior must remain below 350°F to protect the documents within.
1-Hour Fire Endurance – Subjected to temperatures of 1700°F for 1 hour. The interior must remain below 350°F to protect the documents within.
2-Hour Fire Endurance – Subjected to temperatures of 1850°F for 2 hours. The interior must remain below 350°F to protect the documents within.
Fire-Impact – After being heated to 1550°F, the product is dropped 30 feet onto rubble. It is then cooled, inverted and reheated to 1550°F for 1/2 hour. The safe must remain intact and locked, with an interior temperature below 350°F.
Putting a SentrySafe to the Fire Test
Most house fires are normally put out within 10 minutes, so a SentrySafe Fire-Safe® product with a UL half hour rating will suffice for most homes. As the temperature of a house fire does not normally exceed 1500°F, ALL SentrySafe Fire-Safe® products will protect your paper documents in a house fire. To ensure that your electronic media, such as CDs, DVDs, USB Drives, Hard Drives, are also protected, ensure that your SentrySafe Fire-Safe® product also has an ETL rating for electronic media.
Many SentrySafe Fire-Safe® products are tested by the independent testing firm ETL Semko, and are verified to be in compliance with the Sentry Group’s specifications for fire endurance. Fire-Safe® products may carry the following ETL ratings:
ETL verified 1/2 hour fire protection for CDs, DVDs, USB Drives and Memory Sticks up to 1550°F.
ETL Verified 1-hour fire protection for CDs, DVDs, USB Drives and Memory Sticks up to 1700°F.
ETL verified 2-hour fire protection of CDs, DVDs, USB Drives and Memory Sticks up to 1850°F.
Waterproof Protection
SentrySafe Fire-Safe® Waterproof Chest and File products have been tested by the independent testing firm ETL Semko. These products are verified to be in compliance with Sentry Group’s specifications for waterproof submersion.
For ETL waterproof verification, a Fire-Safe® Waterproof Products is completely submersed, with up to 2 inches of water above its uppermost surface, for one hour. The amount of water that is allowed to enter the unit must be no more than 0.5 grams (or 8 drops of water).
